California Employers—Take your training and education to the next level

- April 18, 2014 by Thomas Jolliff, ARM, CEES, ALCM (View all posts by Thomas)

The California Department of Insurance has a free training and education program for workers that has received relatively little fanfare, but has the capability to take your company’s worker training and education to another level.

“The goal of the Workers Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP) is to train California workers to be WOSH specialists who will take leadership roles in promoting health and safety in their workplace.” (“The Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program [WOSHTEP]”, 2013).

In addition, WOSHTEP focuses on health and safety on the job in an effort to reduce employers’ workers’ compensation costs. “Special emphasis is placed on employers and workers in industries with significant injuries and illnesses, and workers’ comp costs. They also focus on groups with special needs where English is not the first language, where there may be limited literacy, and also other underserved industries” (“WOSHTEP”, 2013).

The training is available in English, Spanish and Chinese in northern and southern California and provides training resources for Small Businesses, Young Worker Health and Safety, Health and Wellness, and Heat Illness and Safety.

The beauty of WOSHTEP is that the DOI team collaborates with a diverse group of safety professionals from California insurance carriers who are dedicated to improving worker safety and California employers have the opportunity to take advantage of this collaboration.

For more information, contact the Commission on Health and Safety and worker’s Compensation at 510-622-3265 or visit the WOSHTEP website.
