Top Management Safety Involvement

- May 24, 2019 by Leslie Stoll, CSP, ARM (View all posts by Leslie)

With top management support, a company is much more likely to obtain a best practice safety management program and maintain a proactive safety culture.  However, top management support means more than just writing a safety policy.  Top management must be an active part of the safety management system on a regular (preferably daily) basis.

Techniques for involving top management in safety include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • Include safety at production meetings – Start the meeting with safety. Items that could be discussed include:
    • Injuries and near misses in each department including countermeasures for prevention
    • Status of repairs/issues that affect safety
    • Safety discipline actions taken
    • Safety recognition given
    • Update on the latest safety training meeting
    • Safety improvement suggestions.
  • Establish a management safety walk – Upper management should be trained on key safety items to look for whenever they walk the facility or job site.  Management should provide positive feedback & correct unsafe behaviors on the spot.
  • Have management attend (and participate in) safety meetings – Interacting with employees demonstrates how important safety is to the company.
  • Have management drop-in on safety committee meetings – Show appreciation for the extra efforts of the committee members.
  • Create a management safety recognition program – Safety awards are great, but awards and acknowledgement by top management is better.
  • Require all incidents reports be routed to management’s inbox– Management must be aware of all incidents so they can address questions and concerns of employees.
  • Have management review all safety suggestions and provide feedback – No matter how minor the suggestion, having top management acknowledge it will show employees that their ideas are valued.
