BYOD—Safety Tools and Mobile Apps

- September 19, 2014 by John Virsack, ARM (View all posts by John)

When I started in business, cutting edge technology consisted of typewriters and carbon paper.  I am amazed at technology today and how much great information is readily available at our fingertips. As a safety professional, I get excited about using some of the free, handy apps available for Apple and Android devices.  Three of my favorites are:

  1.  NIOSH Ladder Safety App – This shows you how to quickly and properly position a straight ladder at the optimal angle.  It also provides useful information on the proper selection, inspection, and use of ladders.  Additionally, it has a section on ladder accessories, including ladder levelers and standoffs.
  2. OSHA Safety App – This gives you access to information from OSHA including the 1910 OSHA Standards for General Industry, OSHA’s weekly news bulletins and its official interpretations of the regulations.
  3. OSHA Heat Safety Tool – Created by the U.S. Department of Labor, this app automatically identifies your geographic location, and inputs the temperature and humidity data for the time of day and your location.  It then uses this information to calculate the heat index and heat illness risk level.

This remarkable technology can certainly make life as a safety professional easier.  Do you use any apps to manage safety at your company?  Tells us about them.
